Tea tree oil : does it really work?
Tea tree oil, commonly aka TTO is derived from the leaves of tea tree. The tree is native to Australia. It is not the regular tea plant used in making black and green teas. The following is a tea tree oil full review on its use to treat hair loss.
How it works
Tea tree oil has terpenoids, such as cineole, eucalyptol, and viridiflorol, as its active ingredients. The terpenoids give the tea tree its microbial and antiseptic properties. Does it do the job?
Tea tree oil has been found to enhance hair growth. However, its effectiveness in restoring and preventing hair loss depends on the cause. Tea tree oil can cure hair loss resulting from scalp conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that entails a build-up of dead cells on the scalp. Tea tree oil might not be helpful in treating other types of hair loss. Hair loss due to genetic pattern baldness cannot be treated using the oil.
Are there any risks involved?
When applied topically, tea tree oil has been shown to be generally safe. Tea tree oil is much safer than a number of commercial hair products. Only mild side effects may occur such as blotchiness and redness. This normally happens if you use tea tree oil without diluting it with carrier oil. If the side effects do not disappear in 24 hours, consult your doctor or dermatologist. However, it is toxic if taken orally.
